A rare Rhone variety which nearly died out in the 1960s before being encouraged in Australia where it makes a high alcohol, intense wine with an almost soapy mouth feel.
It has also become fashionable to add a few percent of Viognier into Shiraz or Syrah to produce a deeper coloured wine with almost floral notes.
