Vineyard

The grapes were grown at Makaraka, south of Gisborne on the fertile Poverty Bay flats. The soils are deep, Makauri clay silt loams which historically produce the atypical rich Gisborne Gewurztraminers.

Winemaking

Handpicked, whole-bunches from the first crop were gently whole bunch pressed to preserve fruit integrity and prevent loss of acidity. The resulting juice was then left to undergo a natural yeast fermentation in stainless steel. A lengthy four month ferment eventually expired leaving 24 gms/litre of natural residual fruit sugars.
The grapes were gently pressed and the first free run juice was cold fermented. A true stayer, this Gisborne beauty shows delicate rose petal aromas with spicy floral tones. Fleshy tropical fruits with bittersweet characters combine to make a classical yet complex Gewurztraminer with a long tempting finish.

Viticulture

New vines were hand harvested to yield less than two tonnes per acre. Being the first crop, the grapes showed vibrant and pungent natural spiciness typical of young vines.
