Vineyard
The Opaheke vineyard is located in South Auckland, on the outskirts of Papakura. A warm, sheltered vineyard, the vines are close planted and are into their sixth vintage.
Vintage
This was an excellent vintage characterised by a calm bud-burst and no spring frosts. A short period of rain in the New Year reminded all concerned of the wet February the previous year. A warm and dry summer allowed slow development. In spite of rain and heavy dews making their presence felt around vintage, the fruit was cleaner and in better condition than expected.
The wine
After gentle pressing, the juice was cold fermented and left on its lees for an extended period. Partial malolactic fermentation has softened the wine while leaving elegant subtle fruit overtones. Powerful, yet refined and balanced this is a Chardonnay lovers wine. It has tropical fruit salad tastes and a slight mealy backbone. Drinking well on release (July 2007) this wine will develop over the next three years retaining fruit and alcohol for a further 1-2 years. Enjoy with almost all food types - from soft cheeses early in the evening to fruity and creamy desserts!
Packaging
Because we refuse to compromise on quality this wine is sealed with a screw cap.
